In the DEP Heavy-Duty Vehicle Mechanics program, your goal is to become a competent, qualified mechanic in the field of heavy-duty vehicles. Your apprenticeship will be practical and hands-on, taking place in a workshop, where you’ll work on mechanical and electrical components, as well as on heavy-duty vehicle systems. You’ll be trained to perform preventive and corrective mechanical work, inspecting vehicles to diagnose problems and find their source. You’ll learn how to make repairs, replacements and adjustments with precision, and how to carry out test runs to make sure everything’s working perfectly. With this comprehensive training, you’ll be ready to work as a heavy-duty on-highway mechanic and make a vital contribution to the reliability and smooth operation of these vehicles.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Many options are available:

  • You can hold a DES or its recognized equivalent, such as an attestation of equivalent schooling, or a college diploma or bachelor’s degree.
  • If you are at least 16 years old on September 30 of the school year in which you begin training, you must have obtained Secondary IV credits in language of instruction, second language and mathematics in programs of study established by the Minister, or have achieved equivalent learning.
  • If you are at least 18 years old, you must have passed the “General development test” (TDG) and the specific prerequisites for the program of study in question, or have achieved equivalent learning.
  • Finally, if you have the Secondary 3 credits, you can continue your general education at the same time as your vocational training to obtain the Secondary 4 credits you need.
  • You must demonstrate an adequate knowledge of the French language, corresponding to the requirements of the program of study in question. Your mastery of French is essential to qualify.
